INLAND EMPIRE AFFILIATE OF SUSAN G. KOMEN FOR THE CURE FUNDS COMMUNITY OUTRACH PROGRAMS

April 15, 2010 - The Inland Empire of Susan G. Komen for the Cure, one of over 100 Affiliates nationwide dedicated to putting an end to breast cancer, recently provided community grants totaling $515,922 to support Inland Empire area breast health and breast cancer programs and services.

The Komen Inland Empire Affiliate’s local fundraising efforts, such as the Komen Inland Empire Race for the Cure® and other year around events, have enabled it to fund projects that offer low cost and no cost breast health services, breast cancer treatment, patient navigation and community outreach as well as support groups and activities for breast cancer survivors and their families.

“In order to ensure our funds are making the greatest impact, the Komen Inland Empire Affiliate works with local medical experts and community leaders to conduct comprehensive community needs assessments,” said Katie Parker, Komen Inland Empire Affiliate Executive Director. “We have identified specific, unmet breast health needs within our community and ‘filled in the gaps,’ delivering the life-saving message of early detection and providing assistance to medically-underserved breast cancer patients and their families.”

Up to 75 percent of funds raised by a Komen Affiliate remains in the community to fund local breast health education and breast cancer programs and services. The remaining net income (a minimum of 25 percent) supports Susan G. Komen for the Cure Award and Research Grant Program, which funds groundbreaking breast cancer research, meritorious awards and educational and scientific programs around the world.

Susan G. Komen for the Cure was established in 1982 by Nancy Brinker to honor the memory of her sister, Susan G. Komen, who died from breast cancer at the age of 36. Today, the Organization is an international organization with a network of more than 100,000 volunteers working through local Affiliates and events like the Komen Race for the Cure® to save lives and end breast cancer forever .A global leader in the fight against breast cancer, the Organization fulfills its mission through support of innovative breast cancer research grants, meritorious awards and educational, scientific and community outreach programs around the world. Through fiscal year 2009, the Komen Organization, together with its Affiliate Network, corporate partners and generous donors, has invested over $ 1 billion dollars in breast cancer research, education, and screening and treatment programs.

The Inland Empire Affiliate was founded in 1996, incorporated in 1998 and hosted its inaugural Race for the Cure® in 1999. Since its inception, the Inland Empire Affiliate has awarded grants totaling $4.5 million dollars to local non-profit organizations in Riverside and San Bernardino Counties (the Affiliate’s service area) to fund breast health education and breast cancer programs and services.
